Why cucumber is bitter?

Cucumbers are bitter because of a natural organic compound present in it called cucurbitacin. Cucurbitacin is found mainly in the vegetative parts of the plant such as leaves, stems and roots but it spreads to the fruit also. The bitter component is more concentrated in stem area so it is more likely to be found at the stem end of the fruit and rarely moves toward the center of the fruit.

Cutting the darker end of the cucumber (where it is attached to the stem) and rubbing it, releases a white, milky fluid that contains the cucurbitacins.

Why pregnant ladies should not eat Papaya?

Papayas are spherical or pear shaped fruits rich in antioxidants like carotene, vitamin C and flavonoids, vitamin B, potassium, copper and magnesium and fiber. The papaya fruit is very low in calories and contains no cholesterol .Papaya helps in weight loss, boosts immunity, protects digestion, and prevents signs of ageing.

Risk of Eating Papaya during Pregnancy

It is believed that unripe papaya is unsafe for pregnant women, but fully ripe papaya causes no harm. However, all women are supposed to be very careful pregnancy while consuming papaya. Unripe papaya and even semi- ripen papaya are rich in latex, which is known to trigger uterine contractions. Pepsin and papain can ruin the chance of fetus survival as it hampers fetal growth and development. Papaya relieves constipation and it also cures inflammatory bowel movement can create pressure in the uterus and cause miscarriage. So it is suggested not to eat papaya during pregnancy.

Say no to water between and after meals.

Our stomach contains digestive juices that aids digestions and kills bacteria that we might consume immediately in the food we eat. When we drink water immediately after food, it dilutes the digestive juices and thus hindering them from breaking down food. This slows down the digestion process. It is discovered that consumption of cold water immediately after food can leads to excess mucous secretions that can cause common cold and decreases immunity. Drinking water immediately after food also fluctuate the insulin levels in the body thereby making the sugar levels raise. It is important to note that drinking water during meal if body is not properly hydrated would not be harmful. Try drinking 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after meal. Ayurveda recommends sipping minimal amount of water during meals if necessary.
