III. Future Tense

 
 

Future Indefinite or Simple Future Tense

It expresses simply future time i.e. the time that has not come yet.
For Example:
We will complete the work tomorrow.
Formation : In statements, will or shall is used with the first form of verb, in all subjects.
The Simple Future tense is most often used for the following:

  • To express a future act.

Example – Riya shall be sixteen next month.

  • To express what we believe will happen

Example – I am sure she will come tomorrow.

  • To express a decision to do something at the time of speaking.

Example – It is very cold. I will take a hot coffee.

  • Sometimes the future action is denoted by using the words ‘going to’ or ‘about to’ instead of shall or will.

Example – The dance show is about to start.
 
 

Rules

Affirmative Sentence

Subject + will + 1st form of verb + object.
Example :
I will buy a bedsheet tomorrow.
We will complete the work tomorrow.
 

Negative Sentence

Subject + will not + 1st form of verb + object
Example :
I will not complete the work tomorrow.
They will not purchase anything tomorrow.
 

Interrogative Sentences

Will + subject + 1st form of verb + object
Example:
Will you lend me some money?
 

Future Continuous Tense

It is used to show continuous action at some future time.
For Example
They will be playing basketball tomorrow.
Formation
In statements ‘shall’ or ‘will’ is used with be + first form of verb + ing , with all the subjects.
Example
We shall be going to Shimla next summer.
Future Tense is used  :

  • To denote actions which will be in progress at a future time.

Example – The train shall be arriving one hour late.

  • To express actions of the future which are already planned.

Example – We shall be visiting her office tomorrow morning.
 

  • Sometimes be + to is used instead of shall/will be+ 1st form of verb ing

Example – The Governor is to visit the State next week instead The Governor shall be visiting America next month.
 
 

Rules

Affirmative Sentence

Subject + will be + 1st form of verb + object
Example
He will be waiting for you at the library.
 

Negative Sentence

Subject + will/shall  not be + (1st form of verb + ing) = object
Example
He shall not be coming back until next month.
 

Interrogative Sentence

Will/Shall + subject + be + (1st form of verb + ing) + object
Example
Will she be waiting for you?
Will you be coming tomorrow for the dance practice?
 

Future Perfect Tense

It is used for an action which will have finished by some future time or date which is mentioned or before another action has begun.
For Example
She shall have washed the dishes by the time you arrive.
Formation : In statements ‘shall’ or ‘will’ + have + 3rd form of verb are used
Example – They shall have returned your money by next week.
 

Rules

Affirmative Sentence

Subject + will have + 3rd form of verb + object
Example
I will have left the home by the time she gets up.

Negative Sentence

Subject + will not have + 3rd form of verb + object
Example
They shall not have reached far.

Interrogative Sentence

Will + subject + have + 3rd form of verb+ object
Example
Will she have finished the work by Wednesday?
 

Future Perfect Continuous

This tense indicates an action represented as being in progress and a period of time that will end in future.
For Example
By next month we shall have been living here for eight years.
Formation : In statements ‘shall’ or ‘will’ + have been + 1st form of verb + ing are used.
Example
It shall have been raining heavily.
 

Affirmative Sentence

Subject + will have been + (1st form of verb + ing ) + object + time reference
Example
She will have been waiting for him for one hour.
 

Negative Sentence

Subject + will not have been + ( 1st form of verb + ing ) + object + time reference
Example
We shall not have been sleeping by this time tomorrow .
 

Interrogative Sentence

Will + subject + have been + ( 1st form of verb + ing ) + object + time reference.
Example
